Double yellow ejection, #7 for Etna was carded for 2 serious charges within a 2 minute period during the second half. There was no attempt to play the ball. The second one bordered on a red card, by injuring the opposing player, who eventually got up and returned to the game. The player was subbed out after the first yellow but the coach put him back in at the first opportunity.

On 11/03/2006, I, William G. Reed was assigned to officiate the football game between Mt. Shasta High School and Trinity High School. I was the Head Linesman for the contest. We met with the Head Coaches from both teams prior to the start of the contest. The Referee John Chambers told both coaches that sportsmanship is of high priority for both players and coaches, and we would rule accordingly. I spoke with the Head Coach from Trinity before the game, and informed him that I would be on his sideline, and I would inform him what the penalties were, and who committed them as soon as I knew what occurred. In the first quarter, the Umpire threw a flag for illegal contact in the back, above the waist, against one of the Trinity players. I ran out to the far hash mark to get the information so I could inform the Head Coach of the infraction. I made my way back to the sideline to inform the coach, who was yelling at me, wanting to know what happened, while he was standing approximately five yards into the field of play. I asked the Head Coach to step off of the field, and I would explain the foul. The coach didn’t move, and stated that he wanted to know what happened. I told the coach to step off the field again. The coach still didn’t move, and again stated that he wanted to know what happened. I told the coach again to step off of the field. The coach still didn’t move, and asked one more time what happened. At this point I threw my flag, and instructed the Head Coach to step off the field of play. The Referee, John Chambers came to the sideline. I explained what had occurred with the Head Coach. Rather than assessing a penalty that would result in yardage being marked off against the Trinity Football players, I requested that John Chambers give a sideline warning against the Head Coach, rather than enforce the unsportsmanlike activity. John Chambers explained the penalty to the Head Coach, and the rule concerning illegal contact in the back above the waist, and gave the sideline warning. I turned facing the field of play, and the Head Coach said something derogatory about the call that was made. At this time I threw my flag for unsportsmanlike activity on the part of the Head Coach. This flag was thrown at 9:57 of the first quarter, in violation of Rule 9, Section 8, Article 1c for disrespectfuly addressing an official. After that time for the rest of the quarter, and the entire second quarter, the Head Coach was standing very close to me, beside me and behind me, (sometimes less than a foot, I felt that he was trying to intimidate or provoke me). In the second quarter, the Head Coach, and Assistant Coach were both complaining that they were seeing penalties that were on the other side of the field that we were not calling, this was several plays in a row. Believing that the Trinity coaching staff was attempting to influence the Officials judgment, I instructed the Coaching staff to coach their team, and I had heard enough from them. In the third quarter, the Assistant Coach was again complaining about calls that were not being made on the field, for several calls in a row. I again warned the coaching staff about their actions. A play went down field, as the Assistant Coach was arguing what he thought was a penalty that occurred on the other side, I ran by the Assistant Coach and I made contact with the Head Coach on my left side, I was running along the white side line when contact was made. I dropped my flag in the field of play against the Head Coach for unsportsmanlike activity, in violation of Rule 9, Section 8, Article 1i a non-player being in the field of play, and continued to officiate the game. I explained the penalty to John Chambers. I made my way back to where I dropped my flag, to find it lying on the track, which was approximately ten yards off the field. (I was later informed by the chain crew that the Head Coach had kicked my flag off the field). After the Head Coach was escorted off the field, the Assistant Coach assumed the duties of Head Coach. I had to warn the now Head Coach about his players and stat crew conduct, yelling about penalties and yelling “Hurt someone.” I never heard the Coach talk to his team about their conduct. When the contest was finished, John Chambers tossed the ball to the Trinity Assistant Coach, now Head Coach. The Trinity Coach let the ball hit him in the chest and fall to the ground. The coach stated that we were the worst officiating crew that he had seen, and he used some profanity when he said this. The Trinity football players were right next to the coach when he was using this profanity. Had the contest not been over, I would have ejected this coach from the game for his behavior. For further information, I have been officiating football since 1985. I have officiated High School, Junior College, and Semi-Pro Football. This was the first time that I have had a coach disqualify themself from a contest.
